WHAT ARE PROBIOTICS?

Probiotics, a word that means "for life", are the beneficial bacteria that live in your digestive tract. The World Health Organization defined probiotics as "live micro-organisms which when administered in adequate amounts confer a health benefit to the host". The host is you. You depend upon probiotics for a number of things, but perhaps most important is a healthy immune system. There are many different kinds of beneficial bacteria that live in the small and large intestines; the two most prevalent are Lactobacillus and Bifidobacteria.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF PROBIOTICS?

Probiotics have a variety of benefits including the:

• Strengthening of the immune system
• Production of short chain fatty acids that support healthy colon cells
• Manufacture of enzymes that enhance digestion of foods
• Detoxification of intestinal toxins
• Manufacture of B vitamins and vitamin K

WHAT IS THE BALANCE OF BACTERIA?

Both good and bad bacteria live in every healthy person. In a healthy digestive tract, there are both good and bad bacteria. A critical role of probiotics (good bacteria) is their ability to limit the amount of bad bacteria in the digestive tract. Everyday, harmful bacteria enter your body through the food and water that you consume. Probiotics protect you from the growth of bad bacteria in your digestive system by:

• Reproducing themselves into large colonies that crowd out bad bacteria
• Secreting lactic acid, which creates an acidic environment that is unfriendly to harmful bacteria
• Producing natural compounds that help inhibit growth of harmful bacteria
• Using the nutrients that bad bacteria need to survive

The types of good bacteria differ in the small and large intestine. Lactobacillus is the primary probiotic of the small intestine, whereas Bifidobacterium is the primary probiotic in the large intestine. The higher the concentration of these 2 bacterial types, the less space and nutrients are available for harmful bacteria.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU ARE OUT OF BALANCE?

Maintaining a healthy balance is critical to good health. When the balance between good and bad bacteria is upset, health suffers. Probiotic imbalance, or dysbiosis, is when good bacteria decline and bad bacteria increase in your digestive system. When this occurs, many people experience digestive discomfort such as foul smelling gas and bloating after eating, and poor digestion in general. Some people experience candida or other yeast overgrowth when experiencing an imbalance. Diarrhea is another common symptom related to bacterial imbalance. Because probiotics are a key to a healthy immune system, an imbalance can result in a decrease in immune health.

WHAT AFFECTS THE BACTERIAL BALANCE?

Many lifestyle factors can contribute to an imbalance of beneficial bacteria including:

• Poor Diet consisting of refined foods with little fiber content
• Antibiotic use
• Aging
• Chlorinated water and preservatives
• Environmental toxins
• Radiation

THE IMPORTANCE OF THE BALANCE BETWEEN BIFIDOBACTERIA AND LACTOBACILLUS

There are over 500 different types of bacteria in the digestive system; the two most prevalent are Lactobacillus and Bifidobacteria. Bifidobacteria is the most prevalent type in the large intestine, while lactobacillus is the most prevalent in the small intestine. Interestingly, studies have proven that as we age, Bifidobacteria declines, while harmful bacteria (pathogens) increase.

Maintaining healthy amounts of Lactobacillus is widely understood as a key to maintaining a good balance. Lesser known is the importance of Bifidobacteria for the large intestine. These two healthy bacteria could be considered the cornerstones of a healthy balance that help to support your good health. <
