Description: * Acetyl L-Carnitine & Alpha-Lipoic Acid - For Cellular Vitality!
Source Naturals ACETYL L-CARNITINE & ALPHA-LIPOIC ACID contains two critical nutrients, acetyl L-carnitine and alpha-lipoic acid, to support your vital metabolic functions. These compounds support the body's own system for the maintenance of cell function as we age.
• Acetyl-L-Carnitine
Acetyl-L-Carnitine (acetyl carnitine) is a more bioavailable form of the amino acid L-Carnitine and is involved in many metabolic functions. As an antioxidant, acetyl carnitine can protect neurons from damage caused by superoxide radicals. Acetyl carnitine is involved in other aspects of neuronal metabolism and its molecular structure resembles the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. Also, acetyl carnitine supplementation supports energy utilization through fatty acid metabolism in the mitochondria.
Acetyl carnitine is the most easily assimilated and the most stable form of carnitine. Because it can also pass the blood/brain barrier (unlike carnitine), it is a potent and very dynamic brain nutrient!
• Alpha Lipoic Acid
Alpha Lipoic Acid, also called Thioctic Acid, is a disulfide molecule (containing two thiol groups). A thiol (or -SH) consists of a sulfur and a hydrogen atom. This unique antioxidant is both lipid and water soluble, a potent promoter of glutathione and an important co-factor in energy metabolism.
Alpha Lipoic Acid is unique in that, like vitamin C, it is effective as an antioxidant in water based tissues such as the blood, and yet as dihydrolipoic acid it also is effective in protecting fatty tissues and membranes, a role it shares with vitamin E. Thus Alpha Lipoic Acid and dihydrolipoic acid together function as a universal antioxidant, meaning an antioxidant that quenches free radicals in both lipid and water-soluble portions of tissues and cells.
Alpha Lipoic Acid is an important component in the production of energy from carbohydrates. It is involved throughout the complex multienzyme process that catalyzes glucose (blood sugar) into energy. Also, Alpha Lipoic Acid both stimulates insulin activity and reduces insulin resistance.
